High Cholesterol at Applebee's

So it was a light night out with friends on a weekday and we wanted some food after leaving the bar. We wanted something quick, filling, and inexpensive. I have several friends that live in this neighborhood that raved about this spot for a late night bite. I got the Gyro with tomatoes, onions, lettuce, and white sauce. Service was fast and friendly. The entree was extremely well seasoned and a nice size portion for only 7 bucks. I did notice the gyro had this curry like taste to it. All in all if you the area and need a late night bite then grab it here. I would recommend taking it home due to the fact there is no seating indoors or outdoors.

Love this place! Their rice amazing .. And chicken and lamb! And oh yea their salad yummy!

    (5)
  • Josef K.

Good cheap middle eastern food. The place is small and somewhat dumpy but the food is tasty. This is a fast food place

  • Avi I.

This place used to be amazing. It was "the spot" for gyros. Now, it's a hit or miss. Get them on a good day, and it's like you hit the jackpot. Get them on a bad day, and you'll never want to try to hit the jackpot again.

I know that paying 6$ for a very generous amount of Gyro with rice and chicken/lamb is a great deal. But I rather pay double, and have some more attention to what I order. I went there last night, and asked for Gyro with rice and salad, and the guy at the counter started outing thing inside the box like he is pouring soup , and the result was one big mix of rice salad, meat, olives, and white gravy. I ate there multiple times in the past, but this time when I got home I couldn't even look at it. And to get food when you are hungry, and to get disappointed, is something you probably know that can never feel good...

I have a love hate relationship with Gyro King. On the one hand I love the food and find it to be flavorful. And on the other hand I find that their prices and portions for things not typical fluctuate depending on the server. I also think that their menu is in need of more fish options as I do not like tilapia. Ironically Gyro hut opened close by which is run by former workers of Gyro King and they serve salmon. Price makes it a must go on a hurry and budget.

  • Nina M.

I must admit that i had better, but at the same time i also had worst. The place is small, and the people who work there are very professional. I guess since i was during the rush hour, and the place was very busy, when i got home i found that the meat isn't cooked enough. If i would of notice it i would ask him to cook it longer.

  • Vicky M.

Try the other location on newkirk. This locations food is horrible. The food tastes weird like they forgot to season it.

Let me preface by saying: Normally I love this place. But one very terrible experience has me never eating there again. For those talking about the service, I've never had a problem with it, and the food is actually quite delicious. The problem is that the last time I ordered the lamb over rice, there was something black and hard in the meal. I spit it out, thinking it was some kind of hard olive. Imagine my surprise then, when after cleaning the sauce off of this mysterious black thing - it was a cockroach. After some vomiting, and feeling disgusted for 3-4 days, I unfortunately decided that I can't return. I would have gone back to complain, but I was too disgusted, and what would I get for my problems, a $6 gyro? It's pretty upsetting because normally this place is great - but I've never had a cockroach in my food before, so I have to rate it 1 star.

One of the best gyro of NYC, I love the mix gyro the taste is great. I must recommend gyro spot

Decent food. The convenience of having the spot which is open 24/7 is definitely a plus

Best gyro place in Brooklyn!!! I found this place purely by accident or maybe because I was super hungry one night on my way home from church and it was the one place that was open in the area serving hot but fresh food (Open 24hrs). The price is super reasonable... $5 for chicken or lamb pita with plenty of veggies is unbelievable. $6 for rice over lamb or chicken YES, with plenty of veggies of your choices. Cash only! The felafel are too die for. Totally addicted!!! The guys in the joint (no females) are pretty pleasant, they moved really fast with a smile, if you look really hard and the food is super delicious. People come from SI, LI, Queens and yes the BRONX because the food is that GOOD. Take out only. Nothing is perfect when it comes to food, but you won't regret it. Happy gyro eating!!!!!

    (3)
  • Vicky D.

Had a falafel and although it was room temperature the flavor was nice. Veggies were fresh and sauce was flavorful. Wouldn't make it a point to come back, but if in the area and need a quick bite I might stop in.

  • Kirk M.

Food's great, but service is poor. The last two times I've been in line for food, I've been skipped in line while the servers attending customers were watching and they let them order anyway. I'd go to the Gyro King at Newkirk or the Gyro Hut across the street instead.

    (1)
  • Sumbell B.

This place is disgusting I saw cockroaches and bolted out the door. I don't care how cheap the food is I'm not eating with creepy crawlers. Not my style, keep the change because I won't be coming back ! Definition of street meat ...

    (1)
  • Nick P.

Food is always fresh and quickly made to order. Better than ordering from a food cart. Found this place off their bus stop ads around the area and was happy I walked in off the ad.

    (5)
  • Donald K.

Allow me to say this...I have been loving their lamb gyro, over salad, no rice, all sauces, for more than five years! I am not in NY full time! I am in NY for the summer, Atlanta for the winter, Florida for periods in between, and an occasional jaunt to CA. ( TERRIFIED of earthquakes!) when I am home, I get it as often as possible. When I'm in transit, I have a buddy shlep it to me. When I'm in ATL, I have, either, a buddy shlep it to me, or have a concierge take care of it! In the summer, while at my lake house, in the freakin' mountains, I task each and every person I know to bring me my need!

    (5)
  • Pipe A.

Food of the Gods. You get a ridiculous amount of food for what you pay. Staff are great. Gyros are the best in the city..they give you so much that it spills out of the pita and you have to eat it with a fork, nude, at home while sitting in a lawn chair.

  • Leo K.

Wow this was a nice surprise! Was totally not expecting 53rd and 6th quality Halal food in the spot, but it was pretty damn close to being on the money!! Not only did a lamb /rice/salad combo cost only 6 bucks for a generous portion, but the lamb was juicy and seasoned perfectly and the rice was the perfect yellow softness. They gave a good amount of meat unlike alot of places that skimp out and give more rice, and they have plenty of salad options to add on to the lamb and rice included in that $6 price I will make sure this is my new Halal go to in Brooklyn. There is no seating in side, so your best bet is to order out and pick up.

    (4)
  • John S.

Believe the hype. Some of the best Halal fast food I've ever had. Lamb kebobs highly recommended.

    (5)
  • matt w.

Anytime I'm in the area for work (fairly often), I always pop in for some lamb over rice (sometimes mix it up with chicken over rice). One of the best lunches bk has to offer, cheap and lasts a few days. Extra white sauce, maybe a little hot sauce, tell the guys hi, and buy a t-shirt.

    (5)
  • Jaycee G.

Gyro King is a very delicious restaurant when I see people say that there was roaches in the meal that is ridiculous. They are confusing it for a cardamom that looks different but its not a roach very delicious food I recommend it to everyone

    (5)
  • Mark P.

I've been to this place at least twice. Each time, the service is excellent and extremely speedy for takeout. I typically order the lamb and chicken with rice and a mix of veggies. The veggies are always, always fresh and the meats are wonderfully seasoned with great flavor. The price/portion ration makes it very good deal for those on a budget or hungry. I can never finish the entire serving in one setting. I kind of wish this place were around for my drunken Brooklyn nights earlier this year. lol...I recommend it.

    (4)
  • Brian C.

You can't go wrong with Gyro King. My usual order here is the chicken and lamb over rice, as this is the quickest for them to put together (and at $6, you really can't beat it). The meats taste great and the salad is always fresh. If you have a little more time to wait (or call in the order ahead of time), spring for the chicken tikka. Absolutely delicious.

    (5)
  • William C.

One of my best friends is a Pakistani dude who, for as much of a Bensonhurst guido mixed with Sunset Park thug that he sounds like, is a Brooklyn Desi boy all the way. He swears by the food here (with the works), which explains why his wife complains about his waistline so much. I guess I should mention that he lives in Staten Island now and asks me to pick this up on the way there because he loves it that much. That should tell you how good the place is.

    (4)
  • Tamoor H.

Decent gyro, although the meat wasn't so well done. The salad is really good and so are the sauces but the meats are definitely lacking in taste as compared to better gyro places around.

    (3)
  • Faith T.

The only place in Brooklyn I get Halal. You get a large portion for a small price. It's delicious and so filling. Love, love, love this place.

    (5)
  • Michael N.

Extremely mediocre falafel, salad, white sauce, green sauce. Price is unbeatable for the portion size though and food is fresh, quick service. Three and a half stars, wish it was tastier.

    (3)
  • Cathia L.

I thought that I would give them a try, I wasn't so impressed. I've had better from the food trucks. But it was clean and the price is good, plus you get a good amount of food for your buck.

    (2)
  • jacob m.

This place is amazing. Six bucks you get a lot of food and it tastes great. The chicken and rice for six bucks is what I get all the time. I tell them all the vegetables and lots of hot sauce and lots of white sauce and lots of green sauce

    (5)
  • Gabriela L.

Cheap and delicious! Fresh and good service. $7 for a meal that two people could eat. My favorite: chicken over rice.

    (4)
  • Yaseer S.

Some of the best gyros in terms of quality of meat, quantity of meat, and variety of salad choices. I'd give it a perfect rating if it only had a place to sit but it's more of a 2-go kind of place.

    (4)
  • tanichea b.

The food here is delicious! The lamb is well seasoned and cooked perfectly. I highly recommend the lamb over rice. The portions are generous and cheaply priced. This place is not to be mistaken for the Gyro King at Newkirk Plaza. The food at that location is horrible.

    (5)
  • Joanne B.

In Brooklyn today, just had to try Gyro King. We ordered two lamb gyros and the chicken and rice. Plus, two falafels to snack on. Can I say we are now hooked on the King. We made the mistake of tasting our food once we got back to the car. That resulted in our going back to the store to get the second chicken and rice. Food was hot, seasoning was just right, price affordable.

    (4)
  • F A.

Great food, quick service and affordable! I wish it was a bit bigger, other than that you can't go wrong for your buck

    (4)
  • Jay C.

These people and food are really really awesome, FRESH AND CLEAN , unlike other street vendors that sell gyro and other middle eastern food I hope they can annihilate their competitor across the street I hope one day they can sell deserts also

    (5)
  • Moses C.

Love the food taste amazing have me going for seconds lol. I been going to eat at this place for several years now

    (5)
  • Ben G.

The worst food ever, if you are trying to have a constant heartburn do you otherwise do not eat this garbage, the lamb is old and nasty and so is the chicken , fuck this food

    (1)
  • Laura A.

Just had the chicken gyro, it was so good! Tasted fresh & homemade. This place my mom would love, a must for folks who visit Platters in Fair Lawn... This place is the truth!

    (5)
  • Andy W.

I know -I know !!! Nothing good about a fast food restaurant ...but ...the pita lamb sandwich is amazing !!!

    (5)
  • Nolen F.

I think that there are better ways to Cooke lamb. so i did fell off my fit when i visited the place. I guess you need to like this kind of food. But i can say that my sister really liked their food, so i will give the half+ of the optional rating/

    (3)
  • Wolfman K.

    Falafel!!

    (4)
  • DE A.

I saw a mouse in this place running towards the kitchen I was Watchin the workers I noticed there hands it touches money and food and the grill looks disgusting. Never ever eat this cheap stuff

    (1)
  • Chuck R.

You know that a place is good when even the detractors complain then end with ".....but the food was good." This place is open pretty much 24/7 and the food is indeed very good. Large platters for 6 bucks, lamb to die for. GO HERE!

    (5)
  • Hank K.

They truly are royalty of halal foods and deserve the "king" in their name. I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I've been devouring their chicken over rice combo for eight days straight. ( I hope this is not some sort of a record but my wife is away for two months). The bed of rice they give you is always perfectly cooked and lightly seasoned. The chicken is good quality and heavily seasoned with spices that really awaken your taste palates. Party in your mouth. The side dishes are always fresh and of good variety. They have spicy banana peppers, chick peas, cucumber salads, porchini peppers, tomato salad, They will give you a sample of each in your combo. Then they top it off with a white sauce and hot sauce. Yumm. The best I ever had! The place is rather small and packs in quickly, especially on Friday nights. But the army of staff will keep the line moving at a good pace. The decor is something to be desired but at least it is clean especially with the amount of brisk business they are doing. Oh and they are opened 24 hours. I assume for all the cabbies that come through this place. The staff is neither friendly or rude. I think this is due to the sheer volume of business they handle and probably they are exausted. So I'll give them a pass. The price is super cheap! Only $6 for a huge portion of chicken over rice combo that is always a struggle to finish. (But I always dig deep and finish like that guy Adam on the Man vs Food show) $4 for a falafel and $4 for Gyros. You really can't go wrong with this place.

    (5)
  • kadeem s.

Horrible service ..food is good but how do you have a sign saying you accept credit cards then don't accept then when I order then tell me theirs a minimum but have no sign posted... then have the audacity to tell me to go to the ATM next door which is going to charge me 2 dollars....unacceptable .....Get with the times gyro king ppl use credit cards and debit cards more than cash

    (1)
  • Michael M.

Gyro King is the bomb. $6 for Lamb, Chicken, or Mixed Meat on rice, with your choice of veggies (for example - my favorite veggie mix is onions, bell peppers, red peppers, lettuce and black olives). This food is well-seasoned and plentiful. I've never had a problem with rude staff here, they've always been really friendly. Plus, IT'S OPEN 24 HOURS! I used to go to the cart right across Foster from Gyro King, back when their meat-on-rice was $5. Then one day the guy told me the new price was $6, and I thought "why would I pay you $6 when I can pay the same to Gyro King right across the street and get a tricked-out platter?" I don't know if the cart ever went back to $5...I never went back. Long live the Gyro King empire!

    (5)
  • Usman B.

My favorite place to eat when I need a quick meal. Huge serving of rice meat and fresh salad, which is rare for halal places. Quick service and extremely cheap obviously. Employees are really cool too. Undoubtedly the King of gyros!

  • Anubis K.

You know after drinking pretty much the entire day/night there comes a time when one definitely requires a bit of sustenance to qualm those aches and pain in the stomach as the lack of it sets nerve to edge :) any way really enjoyed everything the rice/chicken/veggies/sauces were all pretty much on point as the saying goes :) only one con for me is that it all had to end just like all good things in life usually do and for $6 even for someone as extremely hungry as I was there was yet still enough food left to feed another but it was just so damn good that I managed to ate it all I am afraid :)

    (5)
  • Russ H.

Seriously great food, if you don't care to stand and eat, or just hungover as hell. Its a real value meal, you get a good amount of quality food for the same price as a meal at a fast food spot. I personally would recommend trying their lamb chops, which I would rate as their number 1 dish. In addition you have an assortment of greens and mild to spicy sauces that really add to your meal. In no way, would i consider them a 4 star place for their food but given the market that they cater, they are truly a lot better than their competition. I know lamb chops and you can't get lamb chops this good anywhere for 8 dollars!!!!!!!!!

    (4)
  • HalalBite F.

Positive: Fresh lamb gyro and chicken marinated with tikka masala giving it a better zing than the bland chicken of the NYC gyro carts. Negative: Although very similar to the NYC gyro carts it still does not give you the same experience. The white sauce is different as well. Overall: Great alternative to the NYC gyro carts if you want a slightly different taste and do not want to travel into the city. Revisit: Only if I am in the area and don't want to go in the city

    (3)
  • Bryan C.

Great fast gyro platters. Prices are great also. Everything is good. Best part is the fresh salads that comes with all the platters. Better than most if not all the carts out there.

    (5)
  • Nora A.

They put so much spices on their food. They are really rude especially the guy with gray hair and eyes popping out. They take their Indians customers orders first even though you were there and gave them your order before them. The only reason I gave them a 2 star is because their chicken gyro is really good..

    (2)
  • Samantha M.

open 24 hours food here is always hot and fresh because they always have a line no matter if its 3 AM so you know its fresh food , they are one of the few halal places that serve a mini salad bar with their food , its TO GO ONLY there is no seating which if your desi you already knew that lol the people here are very fast and friendly they do take credit card FYI the portion is HUGE like I eat a lot and I cant EVER finish it id say its enough for two big eatters or three small eatters

    (5)
  • West M.

good, tasty, reliable and fast. in this intersection of like food offerings, this one is definitely my go-to favorite. wish they delivered.

  • Millhouse R.

Absolutely delicious. I had the lamb gyro platter. The lamb, ground and moist with no crunchy or mystery surprises, and loaded with herbs, was perched upon some very heavily perfumed and mildly peppery basmati (sp?) rice. I could actually taste the perfume like aroma. They also have this vegetable sauce, really a condiment, and a yogurt sauce, that go really well with the lamb, or anything else I imagine. Vegetarian will not feel left out. They make falafel, they have salads and other veggies. Going there for their vegetable sauce is worth it alone. I strongly advise that you eat your dish ASAP, like in your car or outside. As good as the food is, it's strictly take-out and put in tight polyurethane clam-shells. Stuff like that tends to re-water itself.

    (4)
  • Anam S.

Last time I went here I ordered and it was a pickup. Lets just say I have tried them in the past and have found them lacking in customer service. The food would always outweigh that ....... Anyways this time I went home and the food made me so sick. I VOMITEd!! Never Again!!

    (1)
  • Kevin L.

The chicken/lamb on rice doesn't compare to the 53rd street vendor's version. The meat is in chucks and overloaded with spices. The veggies on the side was nice but I rather have a pita. Customers always try to cut you in line. Meh, I've experience better.

    (2)
  • David D.

not the best gyro i have ever eaten and the staf is not the most sanitary. the gyro on the street is better.

    (2)
  • M A.

I am dying for one of these in my city. I walked here countless times in 6 days to get lamb and rice at 2 in the morning. SO GOOD. I mean for $6 I could eat off the plate for a couple days, but I'd always come back for a fresh plate of lamb, rice, and veggies. Delish!

    (4)
  • Mary B.

Really good stuff. Every platter is tasty, and such a deal. The only thing that would make it better would be if I didn't have to cross Coney Island Ave to get there--which is why I'm eagerly anticipating the opening of the Gyro King on Newkirk Plaza. The big plastic shawarmas up on the awning that recently popped up behind a section of the plaza (next to the Chase) that's still under construction were a nice surprise. Can't wait!

    (4)
  • tiffanie n.

REALLY REALLY awesome lamb shawarma!! Lamb was really flavorful and tender! The chicken one was just ok...I am not a big lamb fan, but this place really made it delish! And it's $4 for a shawarma so it's cheap and filling since they give you a lot of meat!

    (4)

This place has the best chicken kebab and lamb shawarma in the area. My husband also likes the falafel - it's not over-fried like so many other places make it. The ingredients are super fresh, and the meat is tender and flavorful. Their sauces are extra special too. You can get an enormous plate of food for 6 bucks. My friends visit from Queens and always ask if we can stop here. I don't know why it's still such a secret. Love Gyro King on Foster!

The best falafel & rice and the best lamb pita we've had, hands down. Fresh, not greasy, light & crispy falafel ... really delicious. Very friendly service, too. For ten bucks, two people can eat themselves into a delighted froth and still leave $2 in the tip jar.
